CAMPUS SUPPORT SERVICES Dean of Students' Office The Dean of Students' Office coordinates all aspects of the co-curricular experience. The primary mission of our Division is to provide a high quality experience that not only compliments, yet enhances learning taking place in the classroom. We actively facilitate and promote this concept through programs, facilities, resources and overarching support for the total or "whole" student.
The Office of the Dean of Students oversees and coordinates the Office of Residential Life, Counseling Services, Disability Services, Health Services, Learning Support Services, Career Services, Student Activities, Cultural Center and an array of administrative and student personnel who assist in each of these specialized areas. Center For Academic Success In addition CAS strives to help our students acquire the skills needed to become successful and get the most out of their college experience. Excellent study skills are an important factor in becoming a successful student. We work with students and provide them with the necessary tools to achieve these skills. Some of the services we provide include: academic guidance, tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic coaching. Counseling Center In addition to providing services that help students handle the challenges and stresses of life, we can assist you in the process of helping students by providing consultation or simply being a place to refer students. Consultation: If you are unsure of how to handle a specific student, we encourage you to consult with the Director of Counseling Services, Shikana Temille Porter, Ph.D. Call the counseling center, 562-907-4239, identify yourself to the receptionist, and state that you need a consultation.
Referral: When you discuss a referral to Counseling Services, it would be helpful for the student to hear in a clear and concise manner your concerns and why you think counseling would be helpful. Please know that if you have referred a student to counseling services, we cannot, by law, consult with you about their attendance or the content of their conversations with us, unless the student (client) signs a written consent for us to do so.
For information on how to assist emotionally distressed students (e.g. depresses, suicidal, violent, aggressive, anxious, under the influence or sexually assaulted), please go to: http://www.whittier.edu/counseling/guide/default.htm Cultural Center The Cultural Center is an exciting program that seeks to increase cultural interaction and dialogue on campus. The Center provides support to all students of color by creating bridges to academic and student support services that help students develop career and educational goals. Disability Services Disability Services is committed to ensuring equal treatment, educational opportunity, academic freedom, and human dignity for students with learning, physical/medical, and psychological/psychiatric disabilities. Disability Services is committed to providing reasonable and appropriate accommodations to students with disabilities, assisting students with disabilities in self-advocacy, assisting graduating students transition out of Whittier College, providing academic support and counseling, educating the Whittier College community about disabilities and services provided, and by ensuring legal compliance with state and federal disability laws. Health Center The Health Center is required by law to keep information about students confidential. No information about a patient is released to their family, the faculty, college administration, or anyone else without your written authorization. Free preventative health and wellness services for all undergraduate students, including: treatment of illnesses, flu shots, travel clinics, wellness exams, or immunizations. Residential Life The residential experience plays a significant role in the lives and college experience of students. Our commitment is to provide all residents with a safe and comfortable living environment, free from hazards and harassment. More than just a place to live, residence halls serve as the center for many educational, cultural, and social activities. Residence halls also sponsor other social activities and off-campus events and trips. Student Activities The Office of Student Activities provides students with information on activities at The Club, campus organizations, leadership programs, student media publications, intramural sports, and ASWC student government.
We have an "open door policy" for student questions and concerns, and serve as a resource for students to participate in the leadership process by coordinating activities and programs dedicated to leadership development. Want know what's going on at WC? Check out the Campus Calendar.
